Are Smelling Salts Legal in the NFL and Powerlifting?
The short answer is yes. Smelling salts (ammonia inhalants) are currently legal and widely used in both the NFL and most major powerlifting federations.
In the NFL: You will frequently see players on the sidelines "cracking" ammonia caps before taking the field. The NFL does not classify ammonia as a performance-enhancing drug (PED) because it does not provide a systemic physical advantage; it simply triggers a brief respiratory and neurological "wake-up" call.
In Powerlifting: Major federations like the IPF, USAPL, and USPA allow the use of smelling salts. However, there is a "platform etiquette" rule: athletes are generally not allowed to use them while standing on the lifting platform in front of the judges. Most lifters use them in the "warm-up" area or right before they step under the bar.
The Exception: While legal, some medical professionals in these leagues caution against their use to "mask" head injuries. Using salts to clear the fog of a potential concussion is strictly against modern safety protocols.
